Abitibi-Consolidated Joins the City of Houston and H-E-B for Recycling Project


Abitibi-Consolidated will partner with the City of Houston and grocer H-E-B in a partnership to boost recycling of paper, plastics, aluminum and metals.


The public-private venture will yield 84 recycling containers at H-E-B properties in the Houston area initially. Twenty-eight H-E-B stores will participate. Abitibi-Consolidated will collect the recycled materials and, based on its per weight scale and will also pay the proceeds to local affiliates of Keep Texas Beautiful to support initiatives: e.g. recycling educational programs and materials and clean-up efforts.


Abitibi-Consolidated is one of the largest newspaper and magazine recyclers in the U.S. According the company are annually two million tons of paper diverted from landfills.


It is the first time it has signed on for a multi-site arrangement. Although the move should expand the company's reach in the region. The company also is a major producer of wood products, newsprint and commercial printing papers. It operates 45 facilities and does business in more than 70 countries.


Besides the company, also the city will be involved. It will create an online map to help consumers to locate the nearest recycling container.


"By offering collection containers at participating H-E-B store locations, we are providing an easy and convenient option for citizens in the Greater Houston region to drop off their recyclables," said Sylvain Yves-Longval, vice president of Abitibi-Consolidated's recycling division.
